Dealing with Hope not Hate on Facebook in 3 easy steps

You may well find that like several of us here, daring to disagree with Hope not Hate's propaganda on Facebook leads to you being unable to comment on their posts. Such is the way with fascists - they run a campaign against 'government gagging', and then censor those who dare to disagree with them.

There is still a way you can take action which will affect them on Facebook though. Firstly, you should go to their page and 'Like' it if you have not already done so.

When you have 'Liked' the page, go to the 'Like' button again, and place the mouse cursor over it without clicking. This will give you a manu. Make sure you check 'Get Notifications' and 'Appear in news feed'. That way you won't miss any of their posts.

So, what does this achieve? Facebook changed the way posts by groups such as the 'Hope not Hate' page are seen by those who 'Like' the page. Only a small percentage get to see them automatically, unless they have done what I have just suggested. Typically for a page like HnH's with 60,000 'supporters', probably 8,000 to 10,000 get to see them. To reach the rest, HnH have to pay.

Crucially, how many get to see it free depends upon a number of factors. Chief among these is how relevant their posts are, and Facebook gauge this by the number of complaints their posts receive: the more complaints, the lower the free circulation of their posts. You can make a difference to this by following the steps below. As an example, I have used their post from this morning regarding Peter Adams and UKIP Scotland.

1/. Go to the post on your Facebook wall and place your mouse cursor over it without clicking. You will see a 'V' appear in the top right corner of the post. Click on that, and it will bring down a menu:

 



2/. Click on 'I don't want to see this' and it will give you the following menu:

3/. The choice is yours as to what to click - 'It's spam' or 'I think it shouldn't be on Facebook'. That brings up one of the following windows. Be careful to not unlike Hope not Hate by mistake!

You have just played your part in ensuring that Hope not Hate Ltd have to pay more to get their partisan, party-political lies and distorted truths across to the gullible fools who still believe them to be an anti-racist organisation. Remember to do it to every Hope not Hate post that you see.

We thought we'd make a quick request to our many regular readers.

Just copy the link and paste it somewhere, and please encourage others to do the same. Needless to say, it doesn't go to Hope not Hate, but to this blog. It is known as a 'Googlebomb', as it confuses Google's search ranking system, and will help this blog to appear in Hope not Hate's search results.

Please also don't forget to sign up to Hope not Hate's Facebook page - remembering to ensure they appear in your newsfeed - and then mark their posts as 'Spam' using the pull down arrow next to their postings.

Both of these will help ensure that HnH will have to waste funds promoting their own page that they would otherwise use to attack legitimate, non-racist political parties such as UKIP.

The last time we posted such advice, it prompted a complaint from HnH as it means less money in Nick Lowles' pocket, so it is having some effect. It was, of course, a rather hypocritical complaint, as HnH do this to our Facebook page and have done it since it was founded.

Some Social Media tips for combatting Hope not Hate

We noticed a few months ago that many of our Facebook posts were being marked as spam - we can see such things in the page administration section. We also had a pretty good idea of who was doing this and why.

Some genuine, Hope not Hate spam

The 'why' is quite straightforward. Since Facebook introduced 'sponsored posts', messages posted by pages do not go to all subscribers, but only to a percentage. This ensures that to get maximum reach, you have to 'pony up' and pay Facebook. For what they call 'organic' reach, ie non-paid, the number of page 'likers' who get to see it depends on the record of your page in the past, and the more negative reactions you have had, ie 'hide from page', 'mark as spam' etc, the fewer people see it.

The 'who' is equally obvious. Hope not Hate are terrified that their organisation has outlived its original purpose - the far right is beaten, and it is now targeting a party supported by hundreds of thousands if not millions of former Labour voters. The last thing they want is their hypocrisy put under the magnifying glass.

So, here's an idea. If you want to hit Hope not Hate where it hurts then follow these simple steps:

1.  'like' their page
2. when you have done so, put your mouse over the 'Liked' button on their page, and a drop down menu will appear.
3. Select 'Get Notifications' from the menu
4. When Hope not Hate stories appear in your news feed, you will notice a line above the post with a small down arrow
5. Click the down arrow, and then select 'I don't want to see this'
6. This brings up another menu - select 'Its spam'
7. You then get another menu - select 'Its just a spammy post'

The effect of enough people doing this will be to minimise the number of people who get to see Hope not Hate's hypocritical rubbish, most of which contains appeals for funds and is genuine spam anyway. To continue to get organic reach, Nick Lowles will have to put his hand in his pocket and pay.
